Was Oliver Cromwell Good Or Evil ..

"For the allusions to Hampden (1594-1643), Milton (1608-1674), and Cromwell (1599-1658), the student should refer to a History.
Instead of these three names there are, in the Original MS., Cato, Tully, and Caesar; but the change to well-known characters of our own country has added to the vividness as well as fixed the nationality of a poem that has been translated into so many languages.
It is noteworthy that both Hampden and Milton lived in Buckinghamshire - the county in which is the Stoke-Poges Churchyard. Hampden was M.P. for Buckingham, and it was as a resident of that county that he refused to pay ship money. Chalfont, in which is the cottage where Milton finished ''Paradise Lost,'' is only a few miles from the ''Churchyard'' of the ''Elegy.''
Mitford quotes the following from Plautus as the thought in brief of this stanza and lines : - ''Ut saepe summa ingenia in occulto latent, / Hic qualis imperator, nunc privatus est.'' - Captiv. iv. 2."

Oliver Cromwell was known as the ‘Lord Protector’ of England, Ireland, and Scotland.

The rebellion spread throughout the country and at Kilkenny in 1642 the association of The Confederate Catholics of Ireland was formed to organise the Irish Catholic war effort. The Confederation was essentially an independent de-facto state incorporating a coalition of all shades of Irish Catholic society, both Gaelic and the Anglo Irish. The Irish Confederates decided to side with the English Royalists during the ensuing civil wars, but their main aim was the perseveration of the catholic religion and the land rights of the native Irish and Anglo Irish landowners.

Was Oliver Cromwell a hero? - History's HEROES from …

Oliver Cromwell had eight children, and was married to a woman named Elizabeth Bouchier.

The Irish Confederate Wars (1641-53), or in Irish, Cogadh na hAon-déag mBliana, (which translates as the 11 year war), as the rebellion ended up been called was a pivotal moment in Irish history. This conflict became a key part of the English Civil War and developed into a bitter ethnic and religious conflict which still echoes today in Ireland. The war initially went in the favor of the Irish forces and by 1646 80% of Ireland was under the control of the Confederation. However the end of the English Civil war in 1646 brought a sea change in the fortunes of war and the flood of English parliamentary troops into Ireland changed the tide of the conflict. In 1649 Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland with 12,000 men of the New Model Army and took personal control of the war which was said to be a crusade against a catholic conspiracy and revenge for the killing of protestant settlers in Ulster

Generally he was seen to be more tolerant of "The Independents" (Levellers, Diggers, Ranters etc.) than either Charles I or Charles II, and probably did more to protect some freedom of conscience than others. Those freedoms of course did not extend to the Catholic faith for Cromwell.

Was Oliver Cromwell A Hero Or Villain History Essay

Oliver Cromwell’s father was called Robert Cromwell, and his mother’s name was Elizabeth Steward.

However, the main point that really stuck out for us was the fact that he did kill three thousand Irish Catholics, mainly because they were a different religion to him.

Overall, we are very sure that Cromwell deserved his reputation as a villain rather than a hero, because he was very spiteful and got rid of everything the people loved, and he killed thousands of Catholics, which no one has the right to do.

Cromwell was an military and political leader and was the ruler of England from 1649, till his death in 1658.

May I recommend Tom Reilly's book "Cromwell – An Honourable Enemy: The Untold Story of the Cromwellian Invasion of Ireland" (London: Phoenix Press, 1999). Tom Reilly is an Irishman born in Drogheda (the site of the so called infamous massacre). This makes it even more remarkable that he has concluded that Cromwell was not the heinous Irish catholic hating murderer that popular history has come to portray him, particularly in Ireland. Reilly has fully researched all the available accounts and evidence and demonstrates that Cromwell has suffered badly at the hands of historians and propagandists since the 1660's.

Reilly writes in a compelling style and the portrayal of the sieges and battles is gripping. His analysis is wide and detailed with no lack of footnotes and reference to primary sources. Behind everything else, Cromwell was a Puritan, and you have to view his whole life through that lens. He was not trying to promote religious toleration or a cultural renaissance, he was trying to obey God. And be careful with the counter-argument "What!? Are you saying God could possibly sanction " It doesn;t matter what we think. Cromwell was trying to obey God as Cromwell understood him.
