The Belgian town of Ypres was of strategic importance since many roads, canals, and rivers linked it with the surrounding countryside and the coast. The town was also surrounded with a high ridge on its southern end, and this gave height advantage to the army that controlled the town. Several battles were fought in Ypres during the First World War, and these battles marked the beginning of new methods of warfare including trench warfare and using poison gas. The 1914 Battle of Ypres was fought during a winter that made the battlefields muddy and impeded progress of soldiers. The second battle was fought in 1915 when the Germans launched a new offensive to capture Ypres. However, the Germans made little progress since the allied forces repelled them. New weapons were introduced during the second Battle of Ypres, and these included light machine guns that enabled the allied infantry to capture some ground from the Germans (Liddle, 65). The 1917 Battle of Ypres was fought in rainy conditions that made the battle difficult for both sides. The battle of Ypres eventually ended in 1918 when the Americans joined the allied forces and Germans retreated. By the end of the battle, more than 1,700,000 soldiers were killed together with an unspecified number of civilians.
