Raymond Williams culture and society

Since the introduction of television in our country in late 70’s visual media becomes a very potential tool in informing the current news to the society, entertaining the people and shaping up of public opinion.

Williams, R. (1950). Culture and Society. New York, NY: Colombia University Press.

William terms hegemony as being beyond the focus on culture; he states that it is more focused on the complete social procedure of certain distributions of power and influence. He does not agree that people model their own lives (Vanderbilt University, 2007). To acquire the social procedure that he states, the society has to be composed of certain variables and capacity. In terms of class, the society is distributed into classes which are not equal. Ti is Gramsci who brought about the aspect of dominance and subordination which is not yet being recognized as a complete process. Hegemony is a term that is applied in Marxist theory and arises from Gramsci, who contrasts hegemony from a rule that acquires power from direct political as well as coercive physical manner (Williams, Culture and Society, 1950, pg 5). In our daily lives, our daily happenings is composed of a technical combination of the three aspects of life; political, social and cultural ability. Hegemony in reference to varied forms of interpretations can be this or an active social and cultural ability which are mandatory aspects (Williams, “Marxism and Literature”, AUGUST 28, 2011, pg.108).

Media & society essay

After studying the assigned reading The Handbook of Communication Science, Second Edition: Chapter 20: Media Entertainment, considering the topic of parasocial relationships, answer the following prompts.

Tradition takes place in an institution; education centres are places where knowledge is acquired as well as skills so as to know the social reality and how to cope with it as well as other institutions like the religious and state centres. These are places where tradition is basically contested. While getting to know the objective of the institutions is genuine, the other non-institutions are formations which are neglected and similarly significant. Formations are movements which are known and acts which can be voluntarily distinguished after being formed. When one has a keen focus, we tend to see a much wider working formations which may not be known with the formal institutions or their formal significances and principles and which may similarly be differentiated with them (Wiliams 119). Formations are specialized acts that happen in the externally from the institutions but may get into the institutions as a result of their meanings and values in the wider and quite diffused society.

Hegemony is hence not a high level of ideology or an instance of control, though it is at times taken as being a form of manipulation. It is huge composition of practices and desires over the complete living: our senses and allocation of energy, our modelled perceptions of personal self as well as the whole world. It is a complete system composing meanings and values which when experienced it confirms what is believed. It is hence attributed to reality to several people in the society. This form of experienced reality is confirmed as it is hard for most people in the society in every aspect of their lives. It is hence a form of culture; however a culture which similarly acquires the experienced dominance and subordination classes (Williams, “Marxism and Literature”, AUGUST 28, 2011, pg.110).

This is not to say that television shows and movies cannot be used for good. Many television shows and movie out there work for the sole purpose of providing and spreading information. These include channels like the Discovery Channel and the National Geographic, or documentary films about the various issues and events in our lives. This is the positive side of media, where it is being used responsibly and in a very focused and factual manner. Television is best viewed when it is giving news, not views. All the information that are contained in knowledge-based television and movies are mostly fact-based. This means that the public is given facts that they have the option to evaluate for themselves. This is very much unlike popular media that works to instill opinions and views into our heads.

Proofread Essay Example About Effects Of Media On Society

Since there are many different kinds of media in the world and since different people prefer different media as their source of information, the choice of media and the way the issue of information security is presented in each media is very important in making decisions as well as shaping people's ideas and attitudes. Today, we are being bombarded with information coming from television, movies, radio, newspapers, magazine, and most of all, the internet. This means that we have so much information coming to us these days that it has become very hard for us to filter out the relevant information and to also differentiate what is right and truthful from what is wrong and untrue. We find that the youths are most affected by television and movies since they are visual media and almost everyone is exposed to the most because they are very easily available and provides the highest level of stimulation. Being so visually stimulating, it can also be derived that television and movies have a different kind of effect on the people. What the people watch on television would then work to shape determine the attitude that the public holds for or against various issues. Television and movies can work to provide us with the information that determines our attitudes towards that issue. For example, if programs on the television keep showing young children wearing makeup and fashionable clothes, and the children keep seeing the same images, views, and ideas, as they are enforced on related media such as magazines and the internet, it is very likely that they will start accepting and believing these ideas too. Similarly, television and movies can work to create many stereotypes (e.g. popular girls in high school being rich and fashionable) and these become ingrained in our minds because we are seeing them everywhere. Thus, images on the television and in movies causes people to form certain ideas, notions, attitudes, and stereotypes towards the people and events around them by presenting what its controllers want us to see and what might not necessarily be the truth.
