When Emerson died in 1882 he was the most famous public intellectual in America. This edition of the Complete Works includes all of Emerson’s poems, lectures, biographical sketches, letters, and his famous essays, several of which are here printed for the first time. Their "ethical inspiration and stimulation, their occasional startling phrase, their individualistic idealism, which stirred renascent Yankee New England to its depths, speaks with the same simple power and force in the midst of modern complexities" (Grolier, American 100 47).


First edition with four pages of publisher’s ads dated January 1, 1847 bound before the title of this collection of poems. Octavo, bound in publisher’s boards covered in coated ivory-colored paper, with publisher’s label on spine. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication, “Elizabeth Burgess with the best wishes of R.W.E. 1 Jan. 1847.” In very good condition with some wear to the binding. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed by Emerson in the year of publication.

While visitingabroad Emerson also gathered impressions that were laterpublished in English Traits (1856) a study of Englishsociety.

His Journals give evidence of his growing interest in nationalissues and, on his return to America, he became more active inthe abolitionist cause delivering many antislavery speeches.

In May he made a brief trip to Paris then inthe aftermath of the "Revolution of 1848" before returning togive a course of lectures in England.

Several of Emerson's lectures were later collected in thevolume Representative Men (1850), which containssemibiographical, semicritical essays on such figures as theGreek philosopher Plato, the Swedish philosopher and mysticEmanuel Swedenborg, and the French writer Michel Eyquem deMontaigne, Shakespeare, Napoleon, and Goethe.

The present edition provides for the first time an authoritative text of the , together with an introduction, notes, and supplementary material of great value for the study of Emerson’s creative processes. A list of hundreds of parallel passages in his earlier journals and lectures makes it possible to examine in detail how he drew upon those manuscripts (now published), especially the voluminous journals, as grist for the twelve essays. His subsequent alterations of the essays, particularly in the revised edition of 1847, give evidence of the evolution of his thought and style at this stage of his career. While the text incorporates his revisions, so as to represent his final intention, the earlier versions are given at the end of the book.
