Although Voltaire has a negative view about religion, his views arise from the significant role he sees them play in the society. Therefore, Voltaire writes satirically about religion with a view of pointing out the flaws that exist when it plays such an important role in society. This is established by the depiction of religious characters in the work. Only the old woman, James the Anabaptist, and the Brethren predecessor are portrayed in positive light while the others are negatively depicted. Voltaire also classifies all organized religions as being simply “evil superstitions” (Screech 32). Voltaire shows how the different people in the book hold their religious beliefs highly. For instance, Candide, the lead character, finds himself in the deeply Christian country of Holland.
