The hallmark of the French Canadian essay is that it is both personal (or subjective) and creative. The essay stands apart from any writing that claims to offer an objective explanation of reality or explores a preordained, objective truth that is assumed to be valid for any time and place.

CASP regularly makes available online a wide range of essays, documents, and books concerning Shakespearean criticism and Shakespearean theatrical adaptation in Canada. Our policy in selecting these documents has been to allow for a range of differential voices and positions to be heard, including playwrights, critics, policy makers, graduate students, and so forth. The range of materials to be found on this page is significant: from complete versions of special issues of Canadian Theatre Review devoted to Shakespeare in Canada, through to graduate essays and dissertations, and academic essays that address Shakespearean adaptation in Canada.

(1916) by Stephen , although primarily humorous, sometimes presents serious themes. His satiric pieces reflect the advance made by the essay form in Canada since its early didactic and descriptive precursors. The (founded 1920) encouraged the journalistic essay. Perhaps its most eloquent contributor was scholar Douglas Bush, who displayed a gift for phrasing and allusion, along with a genial irreverence for some of his colleagues' preoccupation with a national literature and identity. W.D. Woodhead and John D. Robins wrote with more overt humour. The essays of other contributors such as Barker , Margaret Fairley, John Macnaughton, Frederick Philip , E.K. Broadus, B.K. , Frank and A.J.M. treated art, the humanities, criticism, contemporary poetry, education and socialist politics with an academic rather than a familiar tone.

Philosophical and political essays, pamphlets, manifestos and polemic exchanges are all arguably forms of the essay. When placed in their original contexts, they afford excellent opportunities to observe sociopolitical and cultural phenomena of their eras. Polemical texts and pamphlets are not always self-evidently critical in nature, and they are made all the more effective when the author's indignation is camouflaged. A complete polemic structure is to be found as an undercurrent in accounts of early voyages, in private and administrative correspondence and in the writings of religious orders in New France. Generally addressed to authorities in the mother country, these texts crystallize metropolitan antagonisms around Canadian situations. They contain a double contradiction, expressing the New World in the linguistic and cultural codes of the mother country, which is itself replete with antagonisms such as those between Recollets and Jesuits or, at another level, proponents of evangelization and champions of exploitation.

This essay explores the connection between Shakespeare and tobacco advertising, particularly in terms of tobacco sponsorship of the Stratford Festival in Canada through donations and paid advertisements. From the 1920s, tobacco companies have used William Shakespeare to endorse and legitimize their products by creating Shakespeare themed marketing campaigns. Yet, the Stratford Festival has demonstrated that Shakespeare may rely on tobacco just as much as tobacco relies on Shakespeare. From its inception in the 1950s, the Stratford Festival has relied on the tobacco industry for financial sponsorship. Thus, the two seemingly unrelated entities—tobacco and Shakespeare—actually seem to share a symbiotic relationship—they each depend on the other for success and survival.
